In 2022, attenuation circuit starts a new series of four-way split albums called THING. The aim is to provide a medium for exchange and presentation of a great variety of artists. As each artist spreads the copies to their network, listeners also get to know the other artists featured on the same disc. The title references the fact that the CDs are physical objects – things! – but also refers to the 'thing' or 'ding' in old Norse and other Germanic languages, which designates the place of a popular assembly or the assembly itself and thus alludes to the 'meeting-place' character of the albums on (or around) which the four artists and their audiences meet, if only virtually.
The artists featured on the third instalment of the THING series hail from Germany, the Netherlands, and Macedonia. Hans Castrup and Steffan de Turck (also known under his Staplerfahrer moniker) create pieces of a rather collage-like nature, including many quasi-referential sounds which seem to tell a story – but one that retains a large degree of mystery. It might be called 'musique anecdotique', to borrow Luc Ferrari's term, but listeners are invited to find out their own punchlines. In the second half of the album, almost as if it were a B-side, Boban Ristevski and Grodock, who is also active as label head of Grubenwehr Freiburg (which despite the name is now based in Leipzig), take us deeper into drone territory. Cartographies get more blurred than in the first two tracks, and if track 1 and 2 were a sort of sonic road movie, now we rather find ourselves out at sea. Or in space? And if so, inner or outer space? Put on this THING and find out.

WESTZEIT
Der vielseitige HANS CASTRUP teilt sich die knapp einstündige Spielzeit der auf 100 Stück limitierten CD "Thing" mit dem Tilburger KrachKünstler STEFFAN DE TURCK (aka. Staplerfahrer) und den mir bisher unbekannten, aber ähnlich orientierten KlangExperimentatoren BOBAN RISTEVSKI und GRODOCK. Zwischen dystopischem Ambient und verschliffenem WeltuntergangsRauschen, düsterer GeräuschCollage und avantgardistischer MaschinenFolter darf sich hier auf höchstem Niveau und ohne jeden Ausfall vieles vermischen – der Habitus erinnert an die Hochzeit des experimentellen Industrial der frühen 80er und das ist doch nun wirklich keine schlechte Referenz. Die Namen Ristevski und Grodock merken wir uns nun natürlich auch.

'Thing' is, of course, a physical thing, the CDR object, but in old Norse and Germanic languages, a meeting place, a place of a popular assembly. This is a meeting of old and familiar names and newbies; well, rather new names for me. The latter constitute of Eisenlager, Wilfried Hanrath, and Hans Castrup. The latter opens up the proceedings with an exciting piece of modern electronics inspired music. Seemingly random drones and tones mingle in ever-changing configurations. Steffan de Turck (whom we better know as Staplerfahrer; I have no idea why he chooses his name for this release) has a somewhat unfocused piece with some interesting percussive loops, but, sadly, also some unimaginative turntables moves. Recently revived and active as ever, Boban Ristevski continues his excursions in drone land, and this time, the subject is acoustic sources; or so it seems. It has that warm laptop/pop sound that we used to love fifteen years ago, and which, in fact, I still do. Grodock, of the Grubenwehr Freiburg label, closes the proceedings with a descent into the underworld of darkness. Deep and mean rumbling below the earth's surface, via a monolithic synth, slowly slicing the core of the earth and unleashing a higher-pitched drone. Lovely!

BAD ALCHEMY
Auch das nächste Thing (ACUF 1003, CDr - wieder mit Feindesign von Dan Penschuck) basiert auf Bekanntschaften und Sympathien, die nicht zufällig auch BA-einschlägig sind. So wie Hans Castrup, hier mit 'Fluxurial Circumstances' als pianistisch und mit Streichern melancholisiertem Rasen der Zeit out of joint, die brausend morpht und ausflockt in Implosionen und Kaskaden. Steffan de Turck hat in Tilburg Mitte der 90er als aMP angefangen und eine kontinuierliche Spur als Staplerfahrer gezogen oder auch gesellig im nordischen Verbund mit Iversen & Sindre Bjerga als A Vibrant Struggle, mit Wouter Jaspers als Preliminary Saturation, mit Frans de Waard als Hyster. 'Murf / Murw' kurbelt als Mahlwerk, das Beat und Noise trommelnd, dröhnend, pochend, knackend, rauschend und wieder trommelnd zerloopt. Boban Ristevski in Skopje, bei AC eingeführt mit Sindre Bjerga, Al Margolis, Occupied Head und als Bücherfresser – nach Nietzsche, Kabbala, Zen, Castaneda & Co. und mazedonischer Esoterik hat er jetzt auch Georges Bataille verschlungen – steckt die Nase sogar in Roger Bacons 'Compendium Philosophiae'. Mirabilis! Auch da kreisen körnig-granulare Sekunden vor einer stereophon wabernden, rauschend verunklarten Lärmwand und schroten dabei das eine oder andere Körnchen Wahrheit. Auch David Leutkart, der sich mit halb traklndem, halb kosmonautischem Anklang Grodock nennt, ist als der Macher von Grubenwehr Freiburg (in Leipzig!) und mit „Der Sog / Kollaborationen“ kein Unbekannter. Er gibt hier, ähnlich vielsagend wie mit Ausschwärmung, Faltung, Metamorphose, Das Zittern, mit 'Das AbWesen' ein Stichwort, das Lacans, Kristevas, Žižeks Abjekt entbirgt. Als das brodelig wummernde, kratzige, raubtierhaft schnaubende Reale (Tote, Unbewusste, Böse, Machtlose, Inexistente, Kontrafaktische, Sadistische, Hässliche, Eklige, Gruselige, Exzessive, Obskure), dem harmonisch pulsende Wellen und eine zirpende Harmonika entgegenwirken.
